Formula’s main purpose was to re-create as closely as possible the properties of breastmilk to fully nourish a growing baby. Yes, there are none of the antibodies and resistance to infection that natural breastmilk has, but here’s where the Fed Is Best campaign comes into play.
Why We Shouldn't Demonize Formula Feeding
There are many studies to suggest that the risk of obesity is increased by as much as 30% for formula-fed babies.
First, statistics are based on studies of a paltry few to make generalizations about a group as a whole. Sometimes that study group is not representative of the population it’s making conclusions about.
Second, all the hubbub is about a risk of obesity. The possibility. The maybe-it-might-happen-maybe-not.
Lastly, I respect science and all its information. But what to do with that information? I believe breastmilk is the best option. Of course I didn’t like to feed my newborn baby synthetic chemicals created in a lab.
But breastfeeding just didn’t work for me. Did I do absolutely everything in my power and devote my entire being to making it work? No, I didn’t. I had a life to live, busy with other (albeit stupid) things (like making meals, getting to appointments, cleaning the house, doing the laundry and oh, my going to my job). The precious few hours I had of leisure, I wasn’t willing to spend them in a lactation consultant’s office. They fell outside office hours anyway.
So even though I understand the potential risks of obesity I may be exposing my baby to, I chose formula. Ultimately, I chose to just feed my baby. They make it sound like obesity is inevitable for the unlucky numbers who fall on the wrong side of statistics, but even people with a genetic predisposition to obesity can overcome it with good food choices and an active lifestyle.
Ready-to-Use: Most expensive, but most convenient. No mixing required.
Concentrated Liquid: Mix with equal parts water.
Powder: Most economical option, easily accessible.
Brands: Go with a reputable brand. As with any product, expensive doesn’t mean better. Strict drug and food regulations in North America disallow subpar formula to be sold. The difference is the marketing and packaging. Bigger companies will update their ingredient list, adding the latest extra additive that will “enhance brain function” and the like, but there is minimal evidence to support these claims. We went with the Kirkland Signature Non-GMO Infant Formula.
If baby is vomiting, lethargic, has diarrhea and/or is not gaining weight, it’s time to consult with your doctor to find a better alternative. If milk allergies are the problem, there are formulas made from soy. Some are made with reduced lactose or partially broken down protein which may make it more easily digestible. Allergies and intolerances have many variations, so talk to your doctor to find the right fit.
